Fly
Reel Drags use by Hayden Anti Reverse Spey and fly reels
The
Anti Reverse fly reel Drag System.
The
Lever Drag System is based on the Disc Brake system in every
car in the world up to and including Formula One Race Cars.
It consists
of a disc, in this case the spool, which has material bonded
to both sides, and pressure is applied to a plate, at the
front and rear, by turning the drag lever in a clockwise
direction.
The
spool used has Graphite Impregnated Teflon bonded to each
side which contacts a cork washer bonded to the gear and
drag plate
The
reels have 38mm drags and the design allows for very high
co-efficiency due to the compounds used.
No heat
transferral back into the spool plate due to the placement
of the Teflon.
The
drag is more than adequate for the job as it is a true disc
braking system.
The
drag on the reel cannot be locked up, but straight pull
pressures through the reel up to 12 kg (25lb) are easily
achievable.
All
parts of the reel are accessible for servicing and it was
purpose built to ensure durability. Having said that the
reel does not need regular servicing.
The
attachment with the reel guides the easy assembly of the
unit. After use the only thing that needs to be done is
to spray with warm freshwater, (the shower is the best way)
to eliminate salt and contaminants and rub a cloth coated
with water dispersant over the reel to protect the aluminium.
Direct
Drive fly reel Drag System
Draw
Bar Drag System with a Cork Drag washer.
The
drag on the reel cannot be locked up, but straight pull
pressures through the reel of up to 9lb are achievable.
With palm heel pressure to the spool rim, further drag pressures
are attainable.
The
placement of the Drag Knob on the back of the frame enables
continuous access to adjust the drag.
All
parts of the reel are accessible for servicing and it was
purpose built to ensure durability. Having said that the
reel does not need regular servicing.
To
dismantle the Direct Drive, remove the screw which holds
the drag nut in place and remove the draw bar, this allows
for the spool to be removed, giving access to the bearings,
which are sealed stainless steel.

to spray with warm freshwater, (the shower is the best way)
to eliminate salt and contaminants and rub a cloth coated
