Beetle fly patters

This Months Fly is the Organza Beetle.

The Organza Beetle is a generic term to cover all Beetle like flies using Organza as their wing case.

These can come in 4 different colours or as many colours as your local clothing fabric shop stocks. You can build from #16's to # 8's or larger including hooks like the Talon Salmon Double as shown in the image above with the same technique.

The examples shown uses closed cell foam, like the sheets available from the $2 type shops. This pattern is ideal for Bass, Trout, Jungle Perch, Saratoga and Cod. And one of the super advantages it floats all day even in rough water

The Degree of Difficulty.
2 out of 10 This is really a very easy and quick fly to tie and ideal for a 'starter' in the fly tying adventure.

Middle wing :
Bottom Wing :

  5. Tie the pointed end of the Organza onto the hook shank. Cut the closed cell foam sheet the width of the beetle.
  6. Cut another point similar to the one cut in the Organza. Tie this under the wing case.

  7. Pull both the Organza and foam down together towards the hooks eye. And tie both item down.
  8. The beetle's head can be formed by building a head with thread. Apply head cement or black nail polish.

Bodies for these beetles can be chenille or even Pistachio nut cases, yes, the half nut shape is almost ideal for Bass sized beetle, and you get to eat the nut as a bonus, first buy about ½ kg to find the best shaped nut !

A variation to the beetle pattern is a clever red ant, build the ant body with dark red thread and then wrap Organza over the body, pulling it tight, then apply Super Glue to the fabric carefully avoiding your fingers, allow to dry and trim the remaining fabric away with a sharp blade.

A black ant can also be improved with the same technique, build the body with black thread and wrap over blue Organza now you have a meat ant/green ant.

Wings can also be crafted by applying Super Glue to the Organza fabric, allow to dry, cut to shape and install them into the fly you are making.

Surf Candies, build the body as 'normal' with a single layer of epoxy, then wrap the body with Organza, glue, trim, and apply a second coat of epoxy, and you have about the best Surf Candies ever seen.

Eyes flies take on a new 3D dimension with the same construction method.

Organza, the Real life material that's Artificial.
